Exploring the Unconscious (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): George Frankl Exploring the Unconscious (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
George Frankl
R327 Discovery Miles 3 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A description of the revolutionary clinical methods developed by George Frankl. The reader is invited into the consulting room to witness - at least to some extent - how the patient is led to reveal to himself, as well as to the analyst, the secret world of his unconscious mind. Frankl's therapeutic methods enable the patient to recall previously hidden experiences of infancy, along with their physical reaction formations, and actually re-experience traumatic events which were responsible for his neurotic and psychotic symptoms. This also throws new light upon the origins of many physical diseases and makes them accessible to psychological treatment. Frankl's therapeutic innovations are intended to set new standards in psychoanalytic therapy. His book provides information for mental health workers, psychoanalysts and psychiatrists, as well as for medical practitioners who are interested in the psychosomatic aspects of medicine.

The Unknown Self (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): George Frankl The Unknown Self (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
George Frankl
R367 Discovery Miles 3 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Combining rigorous scholarship with a deep humanity, this text aims to expand our understanding of the unconscious areas of the psyche. The reader should gain new insights into the often baffling behaviour of children, and may experience illuminating moments of self-recognition. Readers should also be able to discover how social and cultural conflicts and disturbances originate in the psychological conflicts and disturbances of individuals.

Foundations of Morality (Paperback, New edition): George Frankl Foundations of Morality (Paperback, New edition)
George Frankl
R365 Discovery Miles 3 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Frankl examines the role of moral concepts in the life of societies and points to the interaction between neurotic and psychotic disturbances in individuals and the pathologies which periodically overwhelm societies. moral values in the civilisation of the West and an upsurge of antisocial, destructive behaviour. When the moral directives upheld by a culture cease to be convincing, anti-moral attitudes of defiance will arise and an increasing number of people turn to crime, violence and murder, and an unrestrained self-interest and greed, with a profound weakening of social conscience, will dominate the fabric of societies. Frankl asks why morality is necessary in the human species and examines its biological and psychological origins. Humans are no longer controlled by genetically programmed instincts. With the expansion of the pre-frontal lobes of the brain, humans have to acquire values which guide their actions, an inner representation of right and wrong, of good and bad, which, in order to be convincing, have to be given what appears to be universal validity in the form of moral ideas. "Foundations of Morality" describes how these mental presentations are projected upon gods, priests and kings, who become symbolic representations of moral certainties, of rules and taboos to which men have to defer. The Enlightenment of Western civilisation undermined the belief in those symbols of omnipotence and righteousness, and they were replaced by secular ideologies. But now these ideologies of the Enlightenment have also been discredited and defeated. Hence the sense of rudderlessness and outrage against morality which has misled our civilisation, and the "murder of the father" who has betrayed his sons. In the philosophical section of this book, Frankl attempts a rational reconstruction of moral ideas based on an understanding of man's emotional needs.

The Failure of the Sexual Revolution - A Reissue of the 1970s Classic (Paperback, Re-issue): George Frankl The Failure of the Sexual Revolution - A Reissue of the 1970s Classic (Paperback, Re-issue)
George Frankl
R296 Discovery Miles 2 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This work examines the aims of the sexual revolution and the factors responsible for its failure. In showing that its ideas have their foundation in European radicalism, Frankl gives the sexual revolution a wider dimension beyond the superficialities of permissiveness. He presents the connections between social oppression and sexual repression and explains how class society has its roots in the repressive psychic structure and why any attempt to change the one without changing the other is doomed to fail. Frankl goes on to show how the sexual revolution itself has been distorted and exploited by a market-orientated society and also deals with the problems confronting the sexual emancipation of women and questions certain aspects of the women's liberation movement. The book is a critical analysis of one of the most important movements of our time and suggests new directions towards the realization of genuine sexual freedom

The Three Faces of Monotheism - Judaism, Christianity, Islam (Hardcover): George Frankl The Three Faces of Monotheism - Judaism, Christianity, Islam (Hardcover)
George Frankl
R500 Discovery Miles 5 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This challenging work describes in detail the development and history of the three major monotheistic faiths--Judaism, Christianity, and Islam--but also asks why they conflict with one other. Rather than uniting the believers, monotheism has played a crucial role in fostering a fractious society through the manifestation of three different, antagonistic religious systems with each religion claiming to represent God's will and viewing spiritual peace as possible only through victory over the others. This text shows how monotheism can become a unifying force for humanity, posing arguments that will intrigue psychologists, theologians, and general readers alike.
